Burg Breuberg im Odenwald
( Germany )
The fortress Breuberg ranks among the most impressive and best preserved castles of Germany. The inner bailey of the castle was originally constructed in the 12th Century by the Reiz von Lützlebach family for the protection of the cloister's property in the northern Odenwald. Since approximately 1220 they called themselves lords von Breuberg. In 1942 the castle became the property of the German Reich and was used as a immigrant worker camp. Burg breuberg came under control of the province of Hessen in 1949, and serves today as a youth hostel and museum.

The inner bailey, which is the oldest part of the castle, has a curtain wall 10 to 14 meters high, which embodies the images from gothic times. The defense system of the castle is comprised of a high curtain wall and the now dry motte for double security. The first building expansion took place toward the end of the 14th Century with the gate house addition to the west side of the castle. The gate house was formerly equipped with a wooden drawbridge, but the drawbridge was replaced by a double arch stone bridge in 1812.

With it's cobble stone courtyard and heavy battlements, burg breuberg is worth the time to visit. As a german boyscout (pfadfinder) my troop spent three day's at burg breubergs youth hostel. I have many good childhood memories of this place. In addition, breuberg castle allegedly had many secret passages which are still not found.
